Vacuum backpack from Temu: perfect for handluggage

Anyone who flies a lot knows the problem: hand baggage regulations vary from airline to airline and are subject to increasingly strict controls.

Especially with low-cost airlines, it can quickly become expensive if the backpack is even a few centimeters too big or cannot be pushed into the measuring box without force.

I had to experience this myself: a 75 euro fine for too much hand luggage. After that it was clear: I need a better solution. And that’s where the vacuum backpack from Temu comes into play.

Simple backpack with understated design

From the outside, the backpack looks completely unspectacular. Black, simple design, inconspicuous and suitable for everyday use. You wouldn’t think there was any “trick” in it.

But that’s exactly the beauty of it: it doesn’t look like “special luggage” and fits in well with the rest of your luggage.

The inside of the backpack is very well thought out. There are lots of compartments in different sizes for cables, chargers, power banks, toiletries and snacks. I find the waterproof document compartment particularly practical. Especially when traveling, this is great for passports, tickets or other important documents that shouldn’t get wet or crumpled.

Overall, the workmanship makes a solid impression. The handles and straps are well padded so that the rucksack is comfortable to carry even when fully loaded. And if you are traveling with a suitcase, you can simply attach it to the trolley using the special loop on the back.

Vacuum function for more space

However, the real highlight is the main compartment with the vacuum feature. There is an airtight zipper and a small valve to which you can connect the pump supplied.

The principle is simple: you put clothes and other soft items in the main compartment, close the zipper and then pump out the air. This compresses the contents, which saves a surprising amount of space.

Clothes in a vacuum backpack

For my last flight, I packed six T-shirts, two sweaters, a pair of trousers and underwear in this compartment. After vacuum packing, the volume was almost halved. And the best thing was that the backpack could then be easily squeezed into the strict dimensions of the airline measuring box. No stress, no extra fees.

Good backpack for short trips

Of course, the backpack is no substitute for a classic suitcase, as the overall volume is too small for that. But it is perfect for weekend trips, short trips or as a supplement to checked baggage.

And if you pack cleverly, you can actually fit everything you need for a few days. Especially because you can make much better use of the space than in a normal rucksack thanks to the vacuum trick.

More Information

There is one small drawback: vacuuming takes a bit of practice. I was a bit impatient the first time and didn’t pump the air out completely. Then the zipper didn’t close properly and air went back in. But after the second attempt, I got the hang of it.

Incidentally, the pump is light and small, it fits well in the lid compartment or can be left at home if you no longer need to vacuum for the return flight.
